چکیده

We reared the ha rpac t~co~d copepod Nitocra splnipes on d ~ e t s of bacteria, a d ~ a t o m , or a macroalga, evaluating survivorsh~p and growth in short-term (51 generation) experiments Llpid content of the copepods and t h e ~ r d ~ e t s was measured and used as an Index of nutrition Although growth, survivorship and l i p ~ d content of N sp~njpes were signif~cantly greater when fed the diatom whlch had the highest 11p1d content of the 3 d ~ e t s the copepod was able to develop from e g g to adult when fed a 11p1d-poor bacterial d ~ e t Furthermore, t h ~ s pecies was able to go through developmental molts w ~ t h out the addi t~on of food (6 individuals from a starved cohort of 25 made ~t to at least copepod~te stage I ) , suggesting the uptake of dissolved organic matter for growth This widespread es tuanne benthlc copepod apparently has the abllity to survlve on dlverse and nutritionally poor d ~ e t s , a qua l~ ty that is useful in a vanable, detritus-dominated environment

Temperature and food quantity effects on the harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes: Combining in vivo bioassays with population modeling

The harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes has become a popular model species for toxicity testing over the past few decades. However, the combined influence of temperature and food shortage, two climate change-related stressors, has never been assessed in this species. Consequently, effects of three temperatures (15, 20 and 25°C) and six food regimes (between 0 and 5 × 105 algal cells/mL) on th...

An assessment of three harpacticoid copepod species for use in ecotoxicological testing.

The relatively short life cycles of harpacticoid copepods makes them appropriate animals for use in tests that rapidly assess the acute, sublethal, or chronic effects of sediment contaminants. In this study, four harpacticoid copepod species (Nitocra spinipes, Tisbe tenuimana, Robertgurneya hopkinsi, and Halectinosoma sp.) were isolated from clean marine sediments, and procedures for laboratory...

Antibiotic-Induced Change of Bacterial Communities Associated with the Copepod Nitocra spinipes

Environmental pressures, such as physical factors, diet and contaminants may affect interactions between microbial symbionts and their multicellular hosts. Despite obvious relevance, effects of antimicrobial contaminants on host-symbiont relations in non-target aquatic organisms are largely unknown. We show that exposure to antibiotics had negative effects on survival and juvenile development o...

Slow avoidance response to contaminated sediments elicits sublethal toxicity to benthic invertebrates.

Advanced analytical techniques have identified the heterogeneity of sediments in aquatic environments which may impact the exposure of benthic organisms to contaminants. Acute and chronic toxicity associated with short, intermittent exposure to four field-collected contaminated sediments were assessed for the epi-benthic amphipod Melita plumulosa and the harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes. I...

Study on population growth and production of cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops trajani fed on different diets

In this study the effects of different algal and nonalgal diets on density and population growth rate of cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops trajani were studied. To this intention, the copepod were mass cultured in 120 liter tanks by feeding on different diets (5 treatments, 3 replicate in each one) including fresh composition of microalgae: Scenedesmus obliquus and Spirulina maxima (LSS), dried ...
